Our Sportingbet experience

The main reason to sign up at Sportingbet is its welcome match, up to R15,000 at 20x wagering, which turns into withdrawable cash in stages while you play through it.

Getting help is harder. The contact options only appear after you log in, and the public site gives no phone number or email address.

A R15,000 match paid out in ten slices

DepositMatchMax bonusFree spinsWageringMin deposit
1st deposit100%R15,00050 (R200+ deposit)20x bonus (casino)R50

The welcome match is 100% of your first deposit up to R15,000, and the deposit has to land within seven days of registering. On the welcome pack page we captured on 12 October, the deposit bonus card asks for R50 or more. The cards beside it, for 500 Rewards Points and a R1,000 Back Up Bet, need R200, and that higher deposit also brings 50 bonus spins.

Sportingbet Signature Welcome Pack page showing the R15,000 deposit bonus from a R50 deposit

How the match is paid matters more than its size. Sportingbet’s welcome terms say the bonus never sits in a separate bonus balance. Each time you complete a tenth of the wagering, 10% of it moves into your withdrawable cash, so you don’t have to finish everything before any of it is yours.

What 20x costs on a R200 deposit

You have to bet the bonus 20 times within 60 days. Deposit R200 and you get a R200 bonus, so that’s R4,000 in casino bets. Slots keep about R4 of every R100 you bet on average, so that costs you around R160, less than the bonus is worth. You get R20 of the bonus for every R400 you bet, so stopping halfway still leaves R100 of it in your balance.

The full R15,000 is a different scale. It needs a R15,000 deposit and R300,000 in bets, which costs about R12,000 on average.

Among the casino deposit matches we’ve reviewed, only YesPlay asks for less, at 8x. Lucky Fish also sets 20x, counted on your deposit, while World Sports Betting and ZARbet ask for 30x and Playabets for 35x.

Casino Wagering Bonus on a R1,000 deposit Bets needed Time to finish Average cost
YesPlay 8x bonus R1,000 R8,000 7 days R320
Sportingbet 20x bonus R1,000 R20,000 60 days R800
Lucky Fish 20x deposit R1,000 R20,000 7 days R800
Goldrush 30x bonus R1,000 R30,000 7 days R1,200
PantherBet 30x bonus R1,000 R30,000 7 days R1,200
World Sports Betting 30x bonus R1,000 R30,000 Not published R1,200
ZARbet 30x bonus R2,000 R60,000 Not published R2,400
Playabets 35x bonus R1,000 R35,000 7 days R1,400
TicTacBets 35x bonus R1,000 R35,000 48 hours R1,400
Impressario 40x bonus R1,000 R40,000 7 days R1,600

Average cost assumes every bet goes on slots that keep about R4 of every R100.

Games that count, and the rest of the terms

  • Slots count 100%, crash games 75%, blackjack 50% and poker 40%. Roulette, baccarat, BetGames, craps, dice games and sic bo count nothing.
  • Withdrawing or cancelling before you finish costs you the part of the bonus that hasn’t been paid out yet.
  • The 50 spins are worth 50c each and only work on 12 Sportingbet-exclusive slots, including Book of Horus and Farmyard Frenzy. Winnings are paid as cash with no wagering, up to R5,000, and the spins expire after three days.
  • The Back Up Bet is a free bet of up to R1,000 for the sportsbook app, so casino players can ignore it.
  • Sportingbet doesn’t publish a maximum bet while you’re wagering the bonus.

Regular casino promotions

Pragmatic Play’s Drops & Wins is the biggest, with R40,000,000 in prizes. Its random prize drops are paid with no wagering, and its daily tournaments need spins of R3 or more, with R100,000 for first place. Weekend Warrior gives you a spin on a prize wheel each Monday if you opt in and play over the weekend. October’s Game of the Month is Tombstone Slaughter, available in the app only. Everything you play also earns Rewards Points, which the Rewards Store swaps for bonuses and free spins.

469 slots from five studios, and no published total

Sportingbet’s casino help page says it hosts “1000s” of games, but the lobby doesn’t show a total while you’re logged out. What we could count, on the providers tab on 11 October, were five studios. Red Tiger had 142 games, NetEnt 118, Pragmatic Play 111, Nolimit City 62 and Big Time Gaming 36, which comes to 469. Play’n GO, Playtech and Pariplay are listed as well, without a count.

Slots

The Sportingbet Favourites row in our lobby screenshot mixes Pragmatic Play’s Gates of Olympus 2500 and Sweet Bonanza 2500 with Play’n GO’s Reactoonz and Moon Princess, next to an exclusive Sportingbet Starburst. Megaways fans get Big Time Gaming’s originals. Book of Dead came up when we searched the lobby, but Hacksaw’s Wanted Dead or a Wild didn’t. The 53 exclusives deserve a look if you claim the welcome bonus, since the 50 bonus spins only work on 12 of them.

What a jackpot search turns up

There’s no named progressive network. Searching the lobby on 11 October found no Mega Moolah, and “Jackpot” returned four titles, Jackpot Train and three Rainbow Jackpots games.

Evolution game shows and Playtech's Quantum Blackjack

The live lobby is split into roulette, blackjack, game shows and other games, and most of what we saw there on 11 October comes from Evolution. Its game shows include Crazy Time, Funky Time, Mega Ball, Monopoly Roulette and Ice Fishing. Roulette players get Lightning and XXXTreme Lightning Roulette, while blackjack runs from Evolution’s Infinite Blackjack to Playtech’s Quantum Blackjack Plus. Sportingbet doesn’t show how many live tables it has until you log in.

Checking a slot's RTP version before you spin

RTP is the share of your bets a game pays back over time. A 96% slot keeps about R40 of every R1,000 you bet on average.

Studios such as Pragmatic Play sell most slots in several RTP versions, for example 96.5% and 94.5%. The lower one keeps about R55 of every R1,000 instead of R35, so on the R4,000 of bonus wagering described above it costs you about R80 more. Sportingbet doesn’t publish which versions it runs, and a game’s help screen only opens once you’re logged in, so check the RTP there before you play. These are the highest published settings for some popular slots in its lobby.

Game Studio Max RTP
Gates of Olympus Pragmatic Play 96.50%
Sugar Rush Pragmatic Play 96.50%
Big Bass Bonanza Pragmatic Play 96.71%
Reactoonz Play’n GO 96.51%
Book of Dead Play’n GO 96.21%
Starburst NetEnt 96.09%

Express Withdrawals and the R3,000 FNB eWallet cap

According to Sportingbet’s help pages, Express Withdrawals pay straight to your bank, instantly if the automated checks pass and within 6 to 8 hours if they don’t, with no withdrawal fees. That only works if the bank account is in your own name. The choice of payout methods is small, and Ozow, vouchers, Apple Pay and Google Pay are deposit-only.

Method Deposit Withdrawal Withdrawal time
Express Withdrawals (bank) – Yes Instant, or 6–8 hours if checked
Bank transfer (EFT) Yes Yes 1–2 business days
FNB eWallet – Up to R3,000 per payout Within 24 hours
Visa / Mastercard Yes – –
Ozow (incl. Capitec Pay) Yes – –
Apple Pay Yes – –
Google Pay R50–R1,000,000 – –
1Voucher, OTT Voucher Yes – –

Limits for the other deposit methods only show in the cashier once you’re logged in. FNB eWallet payouts go out in four batches a day, at 07:00, 12:00, 17:00 and 22:00, so a request made just after a batch waits a few hours, and anything above R3,000 has to go to your bank. Sportingbet’s terms also say every deposit has to be played through once before you can withdraw it, and after a card deposit it can refuse a withdrawal for 14 days.

Getting verified

  1. Register with your SA ID number. Sportingbet tries to verify you automatically.
  2. If that doesn’t work, you can deposit up to R20,000, after which a 28-day grace period starts.
  3. Upload a document with your name and date of birth, plus proof of address such as a utility bill.
  4. Withdrawals open once you’re verified.

The general terms are stricter than this help page. They allow Sportingbet to void your bets and freeze the account if your ID isn’t checked within 72 hours of your first deposit. Express Withdrawals also need a bank account registered to the same ID or passport number.

An App Store app, and a website download for Android

iPhone users get the Sportingbet app from the App Store. Android is less straightforward, because there’s no Google Play listing, so you download the app from Sportingbet’s own site and allow installs from unknown sources. Sportingbet’s casino page says the full slots library runs in both apps and in your phone’s browser. Some extras need the app, though, including the Game of the Month offer and the Back Up Bet from the welcome pack.

A public help centre, with live chat behind the login

Anyone can read Sportingbet’s help centre, which covers payments, bonuses and verification in detail. Reaching a person is another matter. The contact options on its Help & Contact page only appear once you’re logged in, and the public site lists no phone number or email address. Live chat runs 24/7 for account holders.

Deposit limits, time-outs and product blocks in your account

Sportingbet lets you set your own limits in the account, which YesPlay doesn’t. Deposit limits can be daily, weekly or monthly, and lowering one takes effect straight away while raising one takes 24 hours. A time-out locks the account for anything from a day to six weeks and then reopens it automatically. You can also block single products, such as the casino, for a set period or indefinitely. We didn’t find loss limits, session limits or reality checks on its responsible gaming pages.

Self-exclusion goes through the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board. You fill in its form and email it to [email protected], and the exclusion covers your accounts at other Entain brands too. Until the board confirms it, you’re still responsible for any losses. Sportingbet also links to a self-assessment test from the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation.

If gambling has stopped being fun, call the National Responsible Gambling Programme free on 0800 006 008 (24 hours) or send “HELP” on WhatsApp to 076 675 0710.

4.7 on the App Store, 2.1 on Trustpilot

Where you look decides what you hear about Sportingbet. Its iPhone app scores 4.7 out of 5 from about 13,000 App Store ratings, with reviewers mostly mentioning quick payouts and an easy app. Its South African Trustpilot page scores 2.1 from just nine reviews, two of them from the last 12 months. We couldn’t find a HelloPeter profile on 11 October, because the old page returns an error and HelloPeter’s search shows no Sportingbet listing.

The written complaints cover bonus winnings taken back when a bonus expired, slow or unhelpful replies from support, and verification holding up withdrawals. Older HelloPeter reviews also asked for more deposit and withdrawal methods. That’s player opinion from a small number of reviews, and unhappy players are more likely to write one.

How to sign up at Sportingbet

Registration takes about five minutes. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit Sportingbet

Use the button on this page to open Sportingbet and tap Register.

  2. Open your account

Sign up with your cellphone number and email. Sportingbet tries to verify your ID automatically, and may ask for your ID and proof of address.

  3. Deposit within 7 days

Deposit R50 or more for the 100% match, or R200 or more to also get the 50 bonus spins and the rest of the welcome pack.

Who Sportingbet suits, and who should look elsewhere

Choose Sportingbet if you mostly play slots and want a large deposit match that turns into cash in stages as you play, plus spending limits and time-outs you can set yourself. Look elsewhere if roulette or baccarat is your game, since those bets do nothing for the bonus, or if you want to talk to support before you've opened an account. We score it 4.0 out of 5.

Yes. Sportingbet South Africa is run by GreatOdds (Pty) Ltd in Cape Town under the Entain brand and holds bookmaker licence 10125193-020 from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board.

Does Sportingbet have a no deposit bonus?

No. Every part of the welcome pack is tied to your first deposit.

No. The welcome terms don't mention a code, and the match is added when you make a qualifying first deposit.

Can I use the Sportingbet bonus on sports?

Yes. You can clear the match on sports or horse racing instead of the casino, at 5x on bets with odds of 1.90 or more, within the same 60 days.

Can two people in one household claim the welcome bonus?

No. Sportingbet allows one welcome offer per person, household, IP address and device, so a second account at the same address won't get it.
